First, which kind of estimating do you do?
Read both columns. One of them is your Tuesday.
| You bid off plans | You quote on site | |
|---|---|---|
| The work | Commercial slabs, flatwork, structural | Garages, patios, driveways, shop floors |
| Where you estimate | At a desk, from drawings | In the driveway, from a tape or a laser |
| Who you hand it to | A general contractor, on bid day | A homeowner, standing next to you |
| What wins it | Accurate quantities and unit costs | Speed, options and looking sharp |
| Software you need | Takeoff and bid software | A quote tool that runs on a phone |
| Deciding number | Cost per unit against the bid list | Margin per square foot |
Some shops do both. If that's you, they're two purchases, not one.
How we picked, and what to distrust
- What we read. Each vendor's own published documents on 2026-07-26, for the on site quoting tools.
- What we did not read. We did not review the takeoff and bid packages. They serve commercial bidding, our readers are mostly residential, and a half checked review is worse than none. So the takeoff half of this page names the category and tells you what to test. It does not rank products.
- No prices. Software prices move. Ours are on the pricing page and they're current. For anybody else, get a quote.
- Our bias. We sell one of the on site tools. It's last in the list, with a plain line on the shops it doesn't fit.
If you bid off plans
You need takeoff before you need anything else. Takeoff is measuring quantities off a drawing: square feet of slab, linear feet of curb, cubic yards of pour. Do that wrong and nothing downstream saves you.
What good looks like on this side.
- Digital takeoff from a PDF. You scale the drawing once, then click areas and lines. No printed sheets and a highlighter.
- A cost library you own. Your unit costs for concrete, rebar, forms, pump time and finish labor, in one place you can update when prices move.
- Assemblies. One click adds the slab, the mesh, the vapor barrier and the labor together, because you never price a slab alone.
- Bid day math that holds. Overhead and profit applied the same way every time, with a clear summary to hand over.
- Revisions without a rebuild. Plans change twice before bid day. Swapping in sheet revision B should not mean starting over.
Names you'll run into in this category include PlanSwift, STACK, Procore and Buildertrend. We have not tested them and we are not ranking them here. Take that list as a place to start looking, then put each one through the five points above with your own set of drawings. A free trial and one real bid tells you more than any review page, including this one.
One warning for this half of the trade. Takeoff software is often sold as a seat with training attached, and the setup is where shops stall out. Ask how long until you can price a real bid by yourself. Then ask who builds your cost library, you or them.
If you quote in the driveway
Different trade, different day. You pull up, measure a two car garage, and the homeowner is standing right there asking what it runs. Every minute between that question and a price on a screen is a minute they cool off.
What good looks like on this side.
- It works on a phone, outside, in the sun. Not a laptop site squeezed down to a phone screen.
- Square footage in, price out. You enter the measurement and pick a system. The software does the rest.
- More than one price. A single number is a yes or no question. Give the homeowner something to choose between and more of them choose.
- Your margin on screen before you send. This is the one most quote tools skip. More below.
- They sign on your phone. Right there, while they're excited, not from an email three days later.
- Follow up that happens without you. Most quotes don't lose. They go quiet.
Jobber
The most polished quoting of the general tools. Templates, line items, e-signature, and years of smoothing out the parts that annoy people. If you also run a second trade, that breadth helps. It prices per seat, and job costing sat on a higher plan.
Best at: the most polished quote in this group. Pick it over us if you quote for more than one trade.
Housecall Pro
Strong quoting plus the best homeowner booking in this group. Good estimates, good follow up, good review tools after the job. Cost tracking looked service call level, not margin per floor.
Best at: homeowner booking and reviews around the quote. Pick it over us if your trucks cover several trades.
Kickserv
An honest, light estimate pipeline at the cheapest price in the group. It'll make a clean quote and chase it. No material math, no crew numbers.
Best at: the cheapest clean quote on this page. Pick it over us if coating is a sideline next to your other work.
ServiceM8
Quick quoting with unlimited users, and real job costing on its upper tier. So you can get price and margin cheap. Billing runs on jobs per month rather than people, which can pinch in a busy summer. We found no inventory.
Best at: price and margin together on a small bill. Pick it over us if you quote more than one trade and count material yourself.
ServiceTitan
Deep estimating with options, financing and a full cost structure behind it. It's built for twenty plus techs, costs accordingly, and comes with a contract and a setup project.
Pick it over us if you're that size already. If you aren't, this is more software than a coating shop can use.
Quote one of your real floors with us
Bring a measurement and your material costs. We'll build the quote on screen in twenty minutes.

This one's ours. Read it like an ad, then make us prove it.
It's built for coating work priced off a measurement. Square footage and slab condition go in. Coverage for resin, flake and topcoat comes out, and so does your margin, before the homeowner sees anything. Good, better and best come out together. They sign on your phone in the driveway. Both plans carry unlimited users, so adding an estimator costs nothing.
Quotes, options and e-signature are on Grow at $147 a month. Job costing and material inventory are on Pro at $297. Both are partner prices and need a referral code. Without one the full platform is $497 a month. If you want quoted margin checked against what the floor really used, Pro is the plan to price. Our product page for this is concrete contractor estimating software.
Where we don't fit: we do one trade, and we price from a measurement rather than from drawings. Commercial bid work needs the other half of this page. Shop size isn't on that list. A one man shop quotes in the same driveway a ten crew shop does.
The number most quote tools won't show you
Ask any quoting tool to show you the margin on the quote you just built. Watch how many can't.
Plenty of software prices a job beautifully and tells you nothing about what's left for you. The customer total is right there in 24 point type. Material cost, labor cost and gross profit are somewhere else, or nowhere.
That's how a shop runs a full year at a price that was wrong from the start. Jobs close, trucks roll, everybody's busy, and the money never shows up. You can't fix what the quote screen never told you.
So test it. Build one quote on every demo and ask the salesperson to show you the gross profit on that quote, on that screen, without exporting anything. It's a fair question and the answer is informative either way. Our side of it lives on the job costing and inventory page.
Test drive: one real driveway, fifteen minutes
Don't let a salesperson drive. Take the keyboard and run your own job through it.
- Pick a floor you finished last month. One you know the real cost of. That's your answer key.
- Build the quote on a phone, not a laptop. Stand up while you do it. That's how it gets used.
- Time it. Over ten minutes for a two car garage and you won't use it in a driveway.
- Add an upgrade mid quote. Flake upgrade, a second coat, a floor drain. Watch whether the price and the margin both move.
- Find the gross profit. No export, no spreadsheet. On screen or it doesn't count.
- Send it to your own phone. Then read it as the homeowner. Does it look like a real company sent it?
- Sign it. As the customer, on the phone. If that part is clumsy, you'll go back to paper.
Seven steps, one real job, fifteen minutes. Run the same job through every tool you shortlist and the winner is usually obvious by the third.
Who should hold off
Two shops should wait, and we'd rather say so.
- Your prices are wrong and you know it. Software will price the wrong number faster. Fix the pricing first, with the method on our how to quote a coating job guide.
- You bid commercial work off drawings. Nothing in the driveway half of this page fits that. Go back to the takeoff section and shop there instead.
Software is a multiplier. Point it at a good number and it's worth real money. Point it at a bad one and it just makes the hole deeper.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best estimating software for concrete contractors?
There are two answers, because there are two kinds of work. If you bid off plans, you want takeoff software that measures a drawing and builds a bid. If you quote driveways and garages, you want a quote tool that works on a phone while you stand on the slab. Buying the wrong kind is the most common mistake on this search.
Can you estimate concrete work on a phone?
Residential work, yes, and that is where the job is won or lost. You measure the slab, pick a system, and the software prices it while the homeowner watches. Plan takeoff is another story. Reading drawings on a phone screen is miserable, so that side of the trade lives on a laptop or a big monitor.
Do I need estimating software or is a spreadsheet enough?
A spreadsheet holds a price. It will not chase the quote, show your margin while you stand in the driveway, or tell you what the floor really cost. That is where software pays, and it pays the same at one truck as at five. If your sheet already does all three, keep it.
What should concrete estimating software show before you send a quote?
Your margin. Not the price, the margin. If the screen only shows what the customer pays, you are guessing at the part that decides whether the job was worth doing. You want material cost, labor cost and the profit left over, on one screen, before you hit send.
Is CoatHQ estimating software or a CRM?
Both, and most owners meet the quoting part first. It is built for coating work you price from a measurement, so a garage, a patio, a basement or a shop floor. Commercial bidding off drawings is a different trade and takes different software. Quotes, options and e-signature are on Grow, while job costing and material sit on Pro.
